Music at KS4 (years 10-11) is an option, and follows the OCR GCSE Music syllabus. This is an excellent, practical course that allows students to work to their strengths and pursue their own musical interests, while broadening their horizons and exposing them to music from around the world and different historical periods. The standard of performing required to achieve the highest marks is around Grade 4 difficulty.
The course breaks down as follows:
Integrated tasks (30%): a performance of students’ own choice, plus a composition to a learner-set brief
Practical portfolio (30%): an ensemble performance, plus a composition to a brief set by the exam board
Listening test (40%): a written paper in which students are played extracts of music from a wide array of styles and answer questions about what they hear
