Hayes School and Ravens Wood School Careers Fair

ravens wood fairAnother successful Careers Fair took place this month at Ravens Wood School where an impressive range of employers, education institutions and training providers came together to offer expert advice to Year 11 students about career prospects and opportunities available to them in the future

Students took advantage of networking and engaging with employers, speaking to them about opportunities and available careers and apprenticeships in their different fields, as well as visiting some further and higher education establishments.

During the Fair, students had a hand out sheet to complete with several questions, one of which was to find out about careers they did not know about - one student, at the end of the Fair, commented “I didn’t know that so many companies offered such a wide range of job opportunities in their organisations”. Prizes were also offered for the “most interacted networker”

The Imperial College School Faculty of Natural Sciences Annual Science Competition

imperial college 1The Imperial College School Faculty of Natural Sciences Annual Science Competition invited students from schools across the world to submit their ideas for turning science into life changing ideas and technology. Team Mitro-Power from Hayes, comprising Year 10 students Imogen Atkins, Ruby Gaskell, Miranda Gillette and Lara Tatli, reached the final round of the competition this week, beating 150 teams from other schools around the world to win their place.

Each idea had to meet one of the UN Goals for Sustainable Development. Team Mitro-power researched, built and demonstrated a microbial fuel cell with the aim of meeting the UN’s goal of Affordable and Sustainable Energy. The fuel cell combined plants and bacteria to generate electric current, and could be used in rural areas in developing countries to provide localised microgeneration of electric power, thereby promoting the development of lower-income off-grid communities around the world.

Skills London Event

16 Year 11 students attended the UK’s largest careers event at the Excel Centre taking advantage of engaging with some of the 200
employers present at the fair, to discuss available careers and apprenticeships in different employment sectors and visiting further and
higher education establishments.

London Insurance Market Insight Event

A group of 6th Form students visited one of London’s iconic buildings, where they were given a taste and overview of the insurance market industry. During the half day event students learnt about the various responsibilities of individual employees, from underwriters and brokers, to risk managers and claims handlers. They found out how their individual jobs were vital for the success of the business. The fun part of the day was when the students, competing in teams, played a board game based on how they would judge different risky situations.

Hayes School Rugby Team awarded

Our Senior 1st XV Rugby team have been awarded the recognition of England Rugby Travel’s Emerging Team of the Season following a successful year in which they have performed beyond all expectations. The team have been unbeaten in their regular set of fixtures and enjoyed a brilliant run in the National Under 18 Schools Vase Competition reaching the quarter final stage.

BBC News Report 2018

On the 15th March 2018, Hayes Secondary School students had the chance to make the BBC news. These excited and enthusiastic students planned, interviewed, presented and filmed a whole report in one day trying to meet the strict deadline the BBC had set. Overall, it was an excellent experience and everyone involved enjoyed their opportunity to become a real BBC News team for the day!
